A New Format

Filed under Dieter | 4 Comments

(For more information about my dieting and weight loss, click here. For more information about the specific foods I eat, click here.)

The last day of 2007 brings change to Saphrym.com. Today I change the format of the Diet Diary posts in more way than one. First of all, since I skipped a diet entry yesterday I’m going to take advantage of that. From this point on the diet diary will consist of the exercise and food of the day before and the numbers of today.

Here’s why: Before, I’d give you my morning numbers of weight and blood sugar and then the stuff I ate and exercise I did throughout the rest of that day. The problem was, the numbers did not correlate with the food and exercise because those happened AFTER the numbers. So now, with the numbers being from the day of the post and the food and exercise from the day before then you will see how the food and exercise effected the numbers. I think it makes much more sense that way. It also makes it fit my schedule better because now I’ll be able to do these posts in the morning until waiting until after I’ve eaten every meal to do them. Since my daughter will be in school, this gives me more time to spend with her.

As for the other change, scroll down past the diet diary and you can see it for yourself. That’s right, it’s my first ever video diet diary. If this one gets enough good feedback, I’ll do more.

As for the 1/2 of Slim-Fast bars today, I wanted to cut back some on my sodium intake. That’s the only reason.

Cereal and Milk

Filed under Cook | 1 Comment

Basically, anytime I eat cereal and milk it’s kind of a treat to myself. So I go with any cereal I want. Whether it’s Cap’n Crunch or Banana Nut Crunch. What I do is I make sure that between the milk and the cereal I get no more than 60 grams of carbs. I weigh the cereal and I measure the milk until it’s perfect.

Looks

(This is a fiction written in answer to the challenge Alan made to me.)

I got out of the taxi and headed into the large building in front of me. It was raining and all I had was today’s newspaper to cover my head. I unfolded it quickly and caught a glimpse of the person I was about to meet. He always had a funny look on his face. I put the newspaper over my head and stepped around the puddles on the sidewalk leading up to the building.

Once inside, I was greeted warmly by a woman in a black business suit. She looked to be in her forties. Her skin was showing the wrinkles but her beauty still existed.

“He’ll be ready to see you in a moment.”

“Thanks,” I said as I followed her.

She walked me through the maze of a building until we reached the door to a room I had never been in and had always wanted to see. When she opened the door it was like the gates of Heaven opening as the light peeked out of the edges of the doorway. My eyes, of course, were playing tricks on me. It was probably my reverence of the place that made me see such a bright light. It faded quickly and I looked closer at the supple leather and old wood furniture behind the door.

“Go on in and have a seat. He’ll be with you shortly.”

I could only manage a nod. I was baffled that I had come this far to meet this person and be in this room. I went to a long leather couch in the middle of the room and sat down. I placed my briefcase on the table in front of me. A couple of books dropped off the table, so I rushed to pick them up, scared I had made a huge mistake. I was quite proud of what I saw. They were books that most men in his position should read.

Why We Want to Kill YouOne was titled “Why We Want to Kill You.” It was written by an ex-terrorist by the name of Walid Shoebat. It tells of the true nature of the Islamic fundamentalists. It is a great book to understand the mind of terrorists being as the author was of the rare breed of a reformed terrorist himself. Very honest and open.

Understanding IraqAnother was “Understanding Iraq” written by William Polk. This was a complete history of Iraq with detailed information on not only the geography of the land and shifts in borders, but also history of famous leaders such as Genghis Khan.

The door suddenly opened, and in walked the Texan to the oval shaped room I sat in. I jumped up like I used to when I was in the military, before I became a journalist. My hand almost saluted until I remembered I was a civilian.

“Mr. President,” I said.

“Nice to meet you son,” he said as he held out his political handshake. It was a good firm handshake. “Have a seat and we’ll get down to having that interview I promised you.”

“Thank you Mr. President,” I said as we both sat down on opposite sides of the table with the books and my briefcase. “Before we get started, I’d like to ask how you liked these books.” I held up the two books I had been studying earlier.

“Sorry son, I haven’t read those,” he said in his Texan drawl. “I just don’t have the time. Off the record, between you, me, and the can of sardines, those are for looks.”

Commandment 11: Thou shalt Stumble thy neighbors.

Seriously, these posts are well worth it. We’ve got money stuff, dating stuff, Entrecard stuff, and health stuff. If you find any of them interesting and good, like I do, then Stumble them. Make me proud!

  • NeverBlueAds - Sean the Blogger - He’s 15. 15!? And he’s making more money with his blog than I’ve ever made with a website. Sheesh. He’s also quite good at reviewing services and this post is good at reviewing NeverBlueAds. Actually, his review made me sign up for the service.
  • How your employer can save you money - The Little Dough Girl - Money advice from a woman who has been there and done that. This is a great article on saving money through using a Flex Spending Account. On her site she also is as upfront about ehr finances as I am with my weight. Take advantage of that and read this blog.
  • This is Where We’re Headed - Sexual Consent - That Single Guy - There’s a lot of pictures, videos, etc. out in the World Wide Web that interest guys. Sometimes it’s just hard to limit them down to just the best stuff for single guy to care about. Well, this single guy does it. The stuff he picks to share with his readers is funny and sometimes informative. Of course, informative doesn’t matter nearly as much as funny. This particular post points to a YouTube video that was hilarious and quite… for lack of a better word… possible.
  • Unrequited Blog Love - I’m not that girl anymore - A great metaphor for the life that is Entrecard. A must read. I’m not telling you anything about it. You have to read it. Yes, you! She’d rather it that way, ya know?
  • New Year’s Resolution: Kick Start Fat and Weight Loss - Fat Man Unleashed - One of the BEST weight loss blog articles I’ve read in a long time. That includes my own. Get your day started right with the proper foods and exercise and you’ll be burning the calories until bed time. Great ideas! Great stuff! Great bang for your buck! (It’s free after all.)

Helping picky eaters to eat better, much Entrecard goodness, sick and twisted wit, and a thinking man’s game. That’s what we have for tonight. Enjoy! And if you really like these posts, make sure to Stumble each post. I already have. And there’s nothing wrong with rewarding great content.

Wow. I don’t know how to say how happy I am about today’s numbers. I’m still under 120 in blood sugar (barely, but this is without meds) and my weight, sheesh, I’m speechless. So no special graphic and nothing else to truly be said. Here’s the diary:

DIET DIARY

Blood Sugar: 119
Weight: 283.6
Fluids: Water (16 oz - 5 times a day)
Exercise:
None.
Meal 1:
Oatmeal
Multivitamin
Snack 1:
1 Slim Fast 220 Calorie Optima Bar
Meal 2:
Red Beans and Rice (Just a basic Louisiana meal. However, this dish contains sausage, so I picked more sausage than beans to keep the carbs lower.)
Snack 2:
1 Slim Fast 220 Calorie Optima Bar
Meal 3:
2 Peanut Butter Sandwiches
Chips

Oops! Guess what? While working on the site all day (Decided some back end stuff needed to be done. Get your minds out of the gutter.), I completely forgot to… wait for it… EAT! I had one meal and then just had one other meal. I’m supposed to eat 5 times. Oops. I’m supposed to make sure I get my water 5 times. Oops. Now, can you imagine someone who used to be 355 pounds saying he forgot to eat? Well, other than twice, I did.

DIET DIARY

Blood Sugar: 95
Weight: 284.4 (From this morning… before I forgot to eat.)
Fluids: Water (16 oz - 1 time)
Exercise:
None.
Meal 1:
2 Turkey Sandwiches
Chips
Multivitamin
Meal 2:
2 Peanut Butter Sandwiches (Wanted the protein and was actually hungry so wanted something quicker than oatmeal.)
Chips
2 cups of Milk (I splurged a tiny bit with the milk. Went over my carbs by 10g. But since I forgot to eat, didn’t think it would hurt.)

Gadget ideas, great short stories, excellent weight loss advice, ideas for Entrecard, and a humorous comic. The blogosphere really does have content!

  • Just an Idea I had - Android Guys - This is an awesome gadget idea. I’ll save the fun of it for you to read about it yourself. But man, the possibilities are endless. And it’s very cool that it may come to fruition.
  • The Letter (Part 1) - Mixed Metaphor - I love the name of this site. Just can’t get over it. As for “The Letter”, it’s a must read. The dialogue is well done. As I read each part I just couldn’t help but want to read more. Grab a cup of coffee and check it out. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
  • 4 Reasons You Should Be Writing a Weight Loss Blog - John Is Fit - I’m jealous. Seriously. This is a post I should have made. But John has done an elegant job and I completely agree with each and every reason.
  • How about this for Entrecard? - DoKnowEvil - This is a great concept. Please join in the conversation and maybe some good will come of this new idea for Entrecard. You can find more about this idea in the Entrecard forums on this post.
  • Beer and Fireworks = Bad Combination - Blog Comics - Normally you link directly to the comic. But I encourage you to take a look at all of the comics. But this particular one made me laugh and almost spit out my water. So enjoy!
