Wizard’s First Rule (Sword of Truth, Book 1)

This is the first book in the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind.

All I can say is “wow!” Ok, so that’s not all I can say. Terry Goodkind is a very impressive writer. He has a way of using simple language to convey very complicated ideas. His own philosophies are scattered throughout the entire series. And yes, these books are very political, philosphical, and fantastical. However, Goodkind does not use the basic fantasy cliches of elves and dwarfs. The people here are human. Do not let any of this information turn you off though.

This book has something for everyone. There’s action, romance, magic, and even an old man with a twinkle in his eye. I’ve always loved those spry old men. They may be a cliche in fantasy fiction also, but they are a great cliche. I never tire of them, and Goodkind uses that particular cliche brilliantly in this book and the series it is part of.

I highly recommend you pick up a copy. Read it. And don’t just read the story. You need to read between the lines to truly get the full effect of what Goodkind is doing with this genre. It’s a great read.

I admit there are people who hate the series. You may be one of them. But give it a try. If you don’t like it, the worse you can really say is that you wasted your time doing something educational (reading).
