This is in response to the question posted in my forums by dpadin:
If you could teach a person one life lesson, what do you think the most important life lesson should be?
Wow. Ouch. That’s a tough one. Although, I did write a post where I compared blogging to the very cool life lessons by Robert Fulghum.
So I’ll pick one of those. Let’s see, the one that sticks out most to me is:
Don’t hit people.
Readers of my blog will know that I “preach” tolerance. And I think this particular lesson is the closest to tolerance. How? Well, if you tolerate different views on life and learn to compromise, then you’re not hitting people physically, mentally, spiritually, or philosophically.
So, tolerance. That’s my most important life lesson1, or at least in my opinion it is the most important. With tolerance comes knowledge of other cultures, people, ways of thinking, etc. With tolerance comes a peaceful way of handling bad situations. “Tolerance” is the peacekeeper of words. But tolerance is difficult.2 It takes work to remain tolerant. It takes an open mind.
What is your most important life lesson?3
- It’s the one I’d stick in a Zero Halliburton briefcase handcuffed to my wrist. That’s how important it is to me. [«]
- Sometimes you just want to wring someone’s neck. Today is one of those days. But that’s another post.

Yeah.. I think “not to hit people” is one of the best life lessons one can teach.. Cause for me the best life lesson would be “don;t do anything you wouldn’t want to be done to you” which is basically the same thing is concept as “not hitting people”.

@dpadin: Yeah. It’s basically the Golden Rule. Which is aptly named.

I’d change that to “only hit people that deserve it” because there are people that need hit. The guy who tried to mug me got a broken jaw and dislocated shoulder ONLY AFTER I tried to walk away 2 times. He should not have tied that third time.

treat people the way you want to be treated…we wouldn’t have to worry about hitting people or even war for that matter.
we tell kids not to hit, but war is okay?

@dpadin: “My advice is strictly for entertainment purposes. I claim no responsibility for anything bad happening to you. Even if aliens abduct you and do unspeakable things to you, it’s not my fault.” Had to say it. My lawyers told me to.
@Richard McLaughlin: As I said, it’s tough. It’s hard to follow. But as Natural says, if the Golden Rule/Tolerance/”Don’t Hit People” thing was followed by everyone, there’s be no hitting each other anyway. And I agree. As I stated in another post, if someone killed or raped my daughter or wife, well, there’d be more than hitting involved.
@Natural: I agree completely. Would LOVE World Peace. But it won’t happen. We can only control ourselves. Too bad not everyone knows how to do that.
