I was thinking recently about New Orleans. Now I know a lot of people think about New Orleans because of Katrina. That’s kind of why I thought about it. See, I’ve moved around a lot in my life. I’m not a military brat or anything, but my dad had a “headhunter” working for him. Basically that means that he kept finding better and better jobs for my dad who would then move us to the new locations. I was born in Columbus, GA but ended up living in other parts of Georgia, Alabama, Canada, Kansas, and finally Louisiana. Louisiana was when my dad decided to settle down for a long time. I ended up living there for over 20 years versus the 1 or 2 years at the other places. When Katrina hit, my in-laws moved in. I’m not even going to go there, but let’s just say I now live in Kentucky and plan to stay right where I’m at until I die.
However, I did like New Orleans. See, my wife is from that area. She lived in Kenner, LA all her life. Kenner is where you are if you go to the New Orleans Airport. Kenner is considered part of New Orleans. It truly is a great place to visit.
I remember a couple of years ago some friends came to visit from all over North America. We had all kinds of plans to hang out with them. We took tours through the haunted areas of the city. We visited Jax Brewery (no longer a brewery but a mall instead). We walked through the French Quarter and listened to Jazz music. We ate at Cafe Du Monde (a great little coffee and french donut shop) and listened to even more great music. The place has a life of it’s own.
Now, however, Katrina has hit and devastated it. So, this is what I am saying: Visit New Orleans. All the same great places exist and they could truly use the money from tourists to help rebuild. You’ll always be entertained and you may just find the history of the place fascinating.
Hotels By City has a great International Hotel Guide. They also have a page about New Orleans. On the right hand side you’ll find different hotels you can stay at. My wife and I have tried most of them. We used to be hotel junkies. We liked the service and such so once a month or so we’d stay at a different hotel just to see what it was like. One of our favorites was the Hotel St. Marie located in the center of the French Quarter. It gave us access to all of the great places to eat, visit, and just walk and enjoy.
If you’re planning a trip, go to New Orleans. They could use the tourist income and you will find your stay very enjoyable. I may never live near there again because I love my new town tremendously, but I will definitely visit again. I miss my crawfish, which would have been healthy for my diet.
