The “Did You Know?” Challenge

Filed under Webmaster/Blogger | Posted by Saphrym

Everyone tells you that you not only should get to know your readers, but that you should let your readers get to know you. So, I’m going to challenge every blogger that reads this to tell your readers something about yourself. I don’t mean the stuff you tell them every day. I mean something you haven’t told them yet. Something they may think is interesting. Or heck, they may think it’s boring. But something. And I want links. Not to my site. I want you to comment on this post with a link to the post you answered my challenge with. And no, answering A/S/L does not qualify as an answer to this challenge. And if you don’t have a blog, feel free to tell us something about yourself in the comments instead. I have no problem with long comments.

But now for the part where I practice what I preach:

Did you know I had long hair? Everyone has seen the following picture, or at least a lot of you have. It’s on my main page at saphrym.com:
Saphrym in his favorite hat

That’s me in my favorite hat. I’m still waiting for someone to send me more hats like that by the way. No one has done so yet and that bothers me. Seriously. There’s no stores here that sell those kinds of hats. I bought it in New Orleans before we left. I need more! (Ok, so not really serious, but hats would be good.)

I don’t have much hair in that picture. However, in this one, I do:
Saphrym with long hair.

Yep. That’s me too. I also still weighed around 360 back then. I did not want to cut that hair. But when we moved to Kentucky, I was starting to look for a teacher job. This is a small town, and I don’t think my “college days” hair would have worked well in the interviews.

So what’s that one little thing that people probably don’t know about you that you’re willing to share?

Cool - looks both (a lot of words come to my mind now that one could interpret the wrong way ;) ) - let’s say cute :D

I don’t think they have these hats here. But if I see one, I’ll think of you :)

The challenge, uh, hard one. Lemme think of it - means I need more coffee ;)

I laughed when I saw the hair, not because you looked funny, but because of a memory it provoked. I was showing my wife photos from college. She didn’t know me back then. So she is looking at a photo of my mother with another person. My wife asks, “Who is that girl with your mother?”

Well, it turns out the photo was me with long hair in college. Ah, the university days. Then there was the time I was driving home from college. A car is driving behind me and there are 2 guys in the car. As I looked in the mirror I thought these guys had a funny look on their faces.

At some point they had the opportunity to pass me on the two lane road. As they got beside my car I glanced over. At that point they saw my mustache and I could see the double take. Like my wife, they had mistaken me for a girl. My hair was long and curly. These guys hit the accelerator and must have been doing 90 MPH within 10 seconds. I had a good laugh.

@Karen and Nicole - Stop! You’re making me blush here! ;)

@kexbrown - You too? When I was really young people thought I was a girl often because my mom kept my hair long. But yes, during college years it happened too.

I love the hair! ;) I hate that we all have to grow up and get rid of stuff like that. I think I’m going to go get my eyebrow re-pierced, just because I can!

Oh, and I took the challenge.

I like the hair. My son had long hair till about a month ago when Uncle Sam said he had to have it cut for a swat team job. I can’t figure out why It matters. But He needs the job so away went his hair. As for the hat.. I’ll keep looking. I love the hat My daddy called his like that his beebop hat. I used to have one made from brown tweed that I wore even though someone told me it was a guys hat. Lol I do have a blog but I’m not giving up any secrets today.the youngest two of My children are just coming to grips with the fact that their Mom has started writing after; as they call it; I am old as hell. They weren’t even born when I was a published writer. No need to Put my secrets out there to give them heart flutters. And since they are my best readers well.. yall know how it is… No need to scare the kids! This has been a bad enough year for them since I scared the crap out of them the week of Thanksgiving. But Having your gall bladder rupture is beyond your control and I wasn’t to thrilled myself. But Oh people.. let me tall yall about morphine.. No maybe not that either..lol Just be satified with the notion that some people.. Like me.. should never ever be given a drug that makes them say exactly what is on their mind. the nurses had a wild week that week. I didn’t even know they had such wonderful drugs out there for people who are in pain. I hadn’t been to the doctor in 18 years till then. Hospitols still have nasty food but other than that a lot has changed in 18 years.. Here if you are a drinker they have a prescription for what ever alcohol your choice is.. I was like damn I’m crazy cause I see a bottle of vodca on the food cart outside my door. My Husband went and looked. ( yall know he thought I was truly crazy!) WE asked the nurse abvout it and she said yea.. Next time I’m gonna tell them I drink. I don’t very often but shoot some of my friends do.. I’ll get them to save me an empty bottle or two.. well maybe not that either.. why should I get them alcohol when I hardly ever drink it and I always have to buy my own. the real reason they now give drinkers their fix is that a person who drinks every single day gets very very nasty when they are suddenly denied their drink. so In South Carolina now.. if you drink they give it to you. I had even got snippy when the nurse asked me over and over if I drank alcohol when they were getting me into the hospitol. But Now I understand the reason.. Oh wait I have a secret I can share.. lol.. I once hopped a freight train when I was a teen. Not near as much fun as it sounds and Damn hard for fat girls to do too.. Have a great Night !

    That’s cool…..

Great idea and I totally agree with letting your readers get to know you on a more personal level. You will certainly build more quality readers. Reader like to know the person behind the words.

cool hat by the way… :)

Much in the same vein I started a “Friday Confession” meme.

My readers are now aware of two facts about me.

    1. I went surfing instead of to History class
    2. I have limited impulse control, but I’m working on it.

@Patsy - You crack me up. Awesome comment!

@Pat - I love my hat. Just got told yesterday that someone is sending me one in the mail. I’ll take a picture and post it here when I get it. Along with a link to their blog. ;)

@Sue - Surfing? Cool. I’ve never been in an area to try it. As for the impulse control, I had the same issue a few years back. I’ve gotten control over it though. At least money wise I have.

You have naturally curly hair, just like me!

Okay, here is something about me: when I was just a babycat and my big teeth were coming in, I used to grind my back teeth together and it made a really loud noise that would send anyone running out of the room away from me.

@Grace - Thanks for the award! The Irishness is awesome.

@Daisy - Yep naturally curly. The hair in that picture went to the small of my back when I was in the shower ad it was wet and heavy. As for people running out of the room, I do that often anyway just by glancing at them. ;)

hey hey i wanna be a rockstar! Great look you had there! Wish I had your locks! =) But I still prefer having my shaved head, it doesn’t take too long to comb (I never comb it anyways!) and it’s a lot cooler in this tropical climate!

@kkrey - I liked my long hair, but I agree. The shorter one is much less maintenance.
